How Often Should Children Have an Eye Test?

Children’s vision plays an important role in how they learn, develop and interact with the world around them. But unlike adults, children may not realise — or be able to explain — that something is wrong with their eyesight.

That’s why regular eye tests for children are so important, even when there are no obvious signs of a vision problem.

When should my child first have an eye test?

Children do not need to be able to read before having their eyes tested.

An optometrist can assess a child’s vision using age-appropriate tests, pictures and other techniques, so even young children can have their eyesight checked.

At Visionwise, we generally recommend arranging a routine eye test from around 3 years of age, or earlier if you have any concerns about your child’s vision or eye health.

How often should children have their eyes tested?

For most children, we recommend an eye test every year.

However, your optometrist may recommend more frequent appointments if your child has a vision problem, wears glasses or needs their eyesight monitored more closely.

Regular eye tests are particularly important while children are growing, as their eyesight and prescription can change.

My child seems to see fine. Do they still need an eye test?

Yes.

One of the biggest challenges with children’s vision is that there may be no obvious symptoms at all.

A child who has always experienced blurred vision may simply assume that everyone sees the same way. They may not complain because they don’t know anything is wrong.

An eye test can identify problems that might otherwise go unnoticed.

What signs of eyesight problems should parents look for?

Although some children have no symptoms, possible signs of a vision problem can include:

  • Sitting very close to the television or screens

  • Holding books or devices unusually close

  • Squinting to see things in the distance

  • Frequent headaches or eye strain

  • Rubbing their eyes frequently

  • Closing or covering one eye

  • An eye that appears to turn in or out

  • Difficulty concentrating on close work

  • Problems seeing the board at school

If you notice anything unusual about your child’s vision or eyes, it’s worth arranging an eye examination rather than waiting for their next routine test.

Why are eye tests particularly important when children are young?

A child’s visual system continues developing during the early years of life.

Conditions such as amblyopia (lazy eye) and some squints can interfere with normal visual development. Detecting these problems early gives your optometrist the opportunity to recommend appropriate treatment or referral while the visual system is still developing.

This is one reason we encourage parents not to wait until their child complains about their eyesight.

What about short-sightedness in children?

Myopia, commonly known as short-sightedness, often develops during childhood.

A child with myopia will typically see nearby objects clearly but have difficulty seeing things further away — such as the board at school.

Myopia can progress as a child grows, which is why regular monitoring is important.

There are also specialist myopia control lenses designed to help slow the progression of short-sightedness in suitable children. Your optometrist can discuss whether these may be appropriate for your child.

Are children’s eye tests and glasses free in Scotland?

NHS eye tests are free for children in Scotland. Children under 16 are also entitled to an NHS optical voucher towards the cost of prescription glasses when glasses are required.
